1958
M.L. Snowden begins a 17 year apprenticeship in the sculpture studios of George Holburn Snowden (1901-1990). The artist’s father, elected to the National Academy and recipient of the 1927 Prix De Rome as well as the Royal Academy’s Order of Merit, engages the young sculptor to be a part of building the Main Altar and exterior massive carved limestone sculptural programs for the nation’s largest religious edifice, The Shrine of The Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. as well as other works which are now national historic landmarks.
