M.L. SNOWDEN SCULPTURE
THE GEOLOGICAL COREIUM - STORM TRILOGY

Windscarf together with Ion and Rainpillar, forms a cornerstone of M.L. Snowden’s STORM TRILOGY. Within the planes of a lithe composition, the wave-like dynamics of air are captured in a sculptural form that embraces motion and rhythm.

Windscarf is the name geological science has given to certain rock formations that are shaped as a result of wind erosion. M.L. Snowden has enlarged the flowing context of Windscarf in the realization that sonic patterns of music, ocean waves, the formation of sand dunes and even the finger touches of the sculptor upon clay, share the deeply related harmonics of wind currents. If the substance of flowing air is to be drawn linearly, then Windscarf is its immortal map forged into bronze.

A significant engineering accomplishment, Windscarf has been sculpted by Snowden to surmount its elevated plinth through a single fused pinion in the knee. Windscarf’s weight is deceptively masked in its attenuated sonic lacings extending from the hairline that seem to describe more negative space than substance. However, the solidity of bronze is ever apparent in the total weight of the overall sculpture that is envisioned to be balanced on so fine a mortise - almost seeming to alight much like the etheric quality of air itself. M.L. Snowden invented the protocols and specific foundry wax that makes the casting and mounting of Windscarf possible.

From important roots in nineteenth century Paris studios which include building protocols directly inherited from Antonin Mercié, Snowden brings to Windscarf the glowing luminous platinum Fournier Patina and the touch of the historic Rodin tools that were used to shape the exquisite planes of Windscarf’s features.

Such is the message of Windscarf and M.L. Snowden’s unique vision, that music and wind share a sonic physicality and numeric harmonic ratio that is infused across physical creation; a realization described by Kepler’s Law and made manifest in bronze. Within the sculptural plateaus of the GEOLOGICAL COREIUM established in the art of M.L. Snowden, humankind expresses a deep connection to the monumental forces and energies that shape the earth and universe.
