M.L. SNOWDEN SCULPTURE
ANGELIC QUARTET

M.L. Snowden’s newest sculpture collection, the Angelic Quartet showcases four exquisite bronzes entitled the Archangel Michael, Archangel Raphael, Archangel Ariel, and Archangel Gabriel.  Each angel literally floats through a moving bronze veil that allows the sculpture to poise in mid-flight.  Celebrating sculptural techniques inherited from Rodin, each one of Snowden’s Angels conveys a delicate balance between substantial bronze weight and delicate workmanship. Placed among the sculptor’s larger oeuvre, the Angelic Quartet creates a strong connection between the spiritual and physical qualities that exist within the heart of Snowden’s bronzes.

Archangel Gabriel rises forward communicating and announcing momentous tidings. Indeed, as the messenger Angel, Gabriel is credited with announcing the Flood to Noah and later, the coming of Christ. At the Cathedral’s Main Altar, Snowden’s Gabriel guards the Holy Reliquary holding the relics of Saint Patrick, Saint Francis of Assisi and the new Native American Saint Kateri Tekakwitha. Indeed, Snowden’s Angel has traveled to the Vatican Museum in Rome in celebration of the canonization of Tekakwitha. Here in Archangel Gabriel, Snowden imbues the sculpture with living motion and the remarkable quality of an indescribable, radiant essence.
